All too soon, Captain Marvel reaches the finale of ‘season’ 2. Pirates have kidnapped Cap’s crew, while she’s stuck on a crippled ship in a relativistically ‘deep’ pocket of space. López still can’t quite stage star battles, but a pair of double-page splashes give the mag a sense of grandeur & scope.

The creative team nail this Christmas issue, full of good cheer. Carol visits Earth, specifically NYC, where her mother figure is hospitalized w/ cancer. For action, Cap teams up with Santa Claus (!) against the mad scientists of KSDC’s first ‘season’ on CM, w/ FL staging a solid hand-to-hand fight.

According to editorial, this is Carol’s 100th solo issue. Ironically she’s off-panel most of the ish, reading about her friends back on Earth. The escapade has the supporting cast (several gals & a token male) vs. a mob of rats! Of the 3 artists, Takara comes off best—but I miss Andrade.

The cover nods to Wicked + Divine, fitting for an issue that guest-stars intergalactic rocker Lila Cheney. She needs Carol, in her role as Avengers space diplomat, to bail her out of an arranged marriage. On a planet of music fans, the conflict is settled onstage (I’d love to hear Carol sing!)

The creative team nail the climax of their brash & fun cinema-style space opera. They’ve got a team of mostly women against a space tyrant, each with her own subplot. The prize is a planet with rare minerals, the underdogs are facing genoicide, and cooperation turns back an alien invasion. Yay!

It’s a space western! The local heavy wants to run all the settlers off some land so he can mine its (space) ore. That puts Cap in the role of Shane, ready to face down an alien invasion cuz it’s the right thing to do. Extra points to KSDC for using Kirby-metal (AKA vibranium) as her ore!

The run takes a deep dive into scifi, like Thomas’ Avengers or Claremont’s X-Men (or Whedon’s, more recently). It’s a Star Wars-y tale as our Avengers sides w/ the local underclass over a big player in recent astropolitics, the Spartoi. The art design, however, owes all to Staples on Saga.

Capt. M intervenes in a refugee crisis, and gets an enlightening lecture on power from a queen. This soft reboot starts to find its footing as KSDC plays to her artist’s strength, which is ‘acting’. Displays of strong leadership & female heroism, but a sense of light heart keeps the issue fun.

López has a simple style, a cut-rate Dragotta, but he has trouble picking the angles to show his ‘staging’ spatially. So he blows a big chance to shine: a dogfight with space pirates. #2 guest-stars the Guardians of the Galaxy, now a generic corporate product, neither the movie rogues nor the DnA misfits.

Carol volunteers (off-panel) to do a ‘year-long’ tour of duty in space for the Avengers. If KSDC is up for space opera, I can’t say no! But what’s great is how briskly she sets up an interim status quo btw vol. 1 #17 and this mag’s new setting. So long to the new digs in the Statue of Liberty!
