April 2015

All too soon, Captain Marvel reaches the finale of ‘season’ 2. Pirates have kidnapped Cap’s crew, while she’s stuck on a crippled ship in a relativistically ‘deep’ pocket of space. López still can’t quite stage star battles, but a pair of double-page splashes give the mag a sense of grandeur & scope.

The creative team nail this Christmas issue, full of good cheer. Carol visits Earth, specifically NYC, where her mother figure is hospitalized w/ cancer. For action, Cap teams up with Santa Claus (!) against the mad scientists of KSDC’s first ‘season’ on CM, w/ FL staging a solid hand-to-hand fight.

According to editorial, this is Carol’s 100th solo issue. Ironically she’s off-panel most of the ish, reading about her friends back on Earth. The escapade has the supporting cast (several gals & a token male) vs. a mob of rats! Of the 3 artists, Takara comes off best—but I miss Andrade.

The cover nods to Wicked + Divine, fitting for an issue that guest-stars intergalactic rocker Lila Cheney. She needs Carol, in her role as Avengers space diplomat, to bail her out of an arranged marriage. On a planet of music fans, the conflict is settled onstage (I’d love to hear Carol sing!)

One thing this mag does well is show how superstrength is only a partial solution. It also mixes the comedy with the adventure well, setting our hero & a raccoon out to save a cat & kittens (actually nearly extinct aliens). A fun cover too, & I hadn’t noticed the title’s new ’80s SF font!

A ‘worst nightmare’ prelude is too grim a cliché for this mag, tho’ it sets the mood for an Alien scenario. The lighthearted twist is that the oviparous monster is Danvers’ pet cat! Takara, subbing for López (already?), seems to enjoy drawing animals (cat, raccoon) but he’s not great at spaceships.

The creative team nail the climax of their brash & fun cinema-style space opera. They’ve got a team of mostly women against a space tyrant, each with her own subplot. The prize is a planet with rare minerals, the underdogs are facing genoicide, and cooperation turns back an alien invasion. Yay!

Capt. M intervenes in a refugee crisis, and gets an enlightening lecture on power from a queen. This soft reboot starts to find its footing as KSDC plays to her artist’s strength, which is ‘acting’. Displays of strong leadership & female heroism, but a sense of light heart keeps the issue fun.

López has a simple style, a cut-rate Dragotta, but he has trouble picking the angles to show his ‘staging’ spatially. So he blows a big chance to shine: a dogfight with space pirates. #2 guest-stars the Guardians of the Galaxy, now a generic corporate product, neither the movie rogues nor the DnA misfits.

Carol volunteers (off-panel) to do a ‘year-long’ tour of duty in space for the Avengers. If KSDC is up for space opera, I can’t say no! But what’s great is how briskly she sets up an interim status quo btw vol. 1 #17 and this mag’s new setting. So long to the new digs in the Statue of Liberty!

Sometimes a character-focused arc doesn’t need a flashy climax, but this one’s too generic. The dialogue suddenly seems phoned in, & the art lacks a cogent sense of space or urgency. But the bigger problem is that Spider-Girl never snaps into focus as an individual, she’s just a girl sidekick with pluck.

Anya Corazon isn’t exactly a moribund character—she’s popped up in Spidey books & a Junior Avengers mag—but she’s esp. well-suited for an Avengers internship. Here she’s teamed w/ Iron Man & then Captain America, but neither writer quite gets the mens’ tones right, a small misstep in a fun arc.

CM returns from its digression into crossover-limbo, happily with Andrade in tow. Carol is given the key to the NYC, an apartment in the Statue of Liberty (!), even a new nemesis! A drone attack plays out in Times Sq, with Cap saved by a ‘Spartacus’ twist. It’s a nice topper to this run’s feminism, which links to the inspirational idealism of pure superheroics.

Spider-Woman and Black Widow rescue Captain Marvel from robo-aliens; a few guys are involved too, incl. Spidey’s BF. The gender reversal is good enough to make this issue of space opera serviceable. But it’s also Event Sprawl, scenes too small for the three mags (!) telling the central story.

Carol’s nemesis isn’t just a resurrected Kree villain, he somehow is the Kirbytech that gave her superpowers; to stop him, Cap gives herself brain damage. It’s comic-book science, not totally clear, but otherwise KSDC executes her finale ably, following the Buffy template of heroic sacrifice.

The Avs fail to stop a superbaddie from focusing energy on NYC using Kirbybots. The art’s fine (a ‘clean’ style that I think of as late ’00s Superman) & so’s the plot. But see how often the minor characters are women, like a guest turn by Sersi? It’s just that easy to write feminist comics, boys!
